Fully automated visual inspection of auto-injectors

Historically, auto-injectors have undergone quality assurance through labor-intensive manual inspections. This traditional method is time-consuming. At WILCO, in partnership with a client, we've engineered a groundbreaking concept for the fully automated visual inspection of assembled auto-injectors, achieving an impressive rate of 300 units per minute.

The Challenge

Our client aimed to revolutionize their inspection process by automating it entirely for three different models of autoinjectors on a single production line. They sought an innovative approach that managed everything from unstacking trays, singulating the autoinjectors, conducting a comprehensive automated visual inspection, to re-loading the autoinjectors into trays and stacking them at the line’s end. A feasibility study was to analyze the possible risks and provide approaches for implementation. The given space conditions had to be adhered to.

Our Approach

Requested by the customer, we commenced with a feasibility study after a comprehensive analysis of their current processes on-site. This study laid the groundwork for developing a tailored machine concept. Throughout the project, our close collaboration with the client ensured all specifications were met and risks minimized. Our system design methodology served as a vital framework, with ongoing dialogues fostering an efficient and effective partnership.

Our Solution

We developed an advanced through-transport system to generate human-inspired particle movement, enabling improved particle inspection and a full cosmetic evaluation of the autoinjectors. By using OptiX, we achieved a stable optical path, eliminating the need for adjustments across vision stations for different autoinjector models.
